The Night is My Enemy

A poster designed by Bob Longmire
of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Yesterday Clint and I attended a play presented by the Powell Playhouse, Inc. here in Knoxville, Tennessee.  This play was written by Fred Carmichael in 1956.  I knew I had to see it when I read the description of this dramatic thriller:

Set in 1900, the play takes place in a large house on the British coast. The story revolves around a girl and her change from a girl to a woman.  A maniac is intent on getting rid of those humans who are imperfect, more imperfect than most I might add.

The sounds of the pounding surf, the thunder, wind and rain set a dark and mysterious mood in the country home of the Fontaines. Add also the flashing of lightening.  Oh, I failed to mention two murders.

For some reason my photos were blurry, it might have been that I rushed through the line afterwards.  There was such a crowd!  That was a good thing.

The stage was beautiful and realistic.

The play was fantastic!  We loved it and they did such a great job.  I also loved the story, there were some lessons to be learned from it.  We want to attend more of their productions.  This was only their second production since they were formed a few months ago.  There was a great turn out for this matinee performance.

Sounds like you both enjoyed yourselves very much. Mike and I used to attend plays at a local playhouse called "Your Theatre" back in Massachusetts. We thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful performances such as "Blithe Spirit" to name one. These actors and actresses take their craft seriously and always aim to please the audience. A real joy! Thanks for sharing.

It was great acting and a great and friendly crowd. I thought the theme of the play was timeless---how everyone, to one degree or another, is imperfect. And, that some people with large imperfections make up for this negative with overwhelming love and understanding.

I'd rather go to one of these local productions than see a Broadway play. When I was young my family often took day trips to Caledonia State Park, a campground near Gettysburg. The park is home to the Totem Pole Playhouse, a summer stock theater that became famous when owned by the husband of Jean Stapleton, Edith Bunker on All in the Family. I saw several shows there and enjoyed the ambience. I hope you and Clint go to see more of these matinees and post pics and a review as you did here. Have an excellent week, Cindy!

P.S. - A woman who lives in Fort Worth, TX just became my latest blog follower. On a sad note, the oldest living Dell rat, whose daughter was slated to begin a series on my blog about her life and times at the Dell, recently fell and broke her hip. At age 99 the prognosis is not good for a complete recovery but she is back home from the hospital and receiving lots of TLC from her family. The blog series is on hold while daughter cares for mother.

Carol ~ It seems we all remember fondly the plays we have seen during our lives. (The only one I remember I didn't like was "Noises Off". (Didn't quite understand it and bored me to death) You are so right about the actors and actresses taking their craft seriously. I admire that in them. I am wanting Clint to get up on a stage, maybe try out for this local playhouse. He has such a good voice. Thank you, Carol, it is so nice to actually see your photograph again. BTW, Clint and I had an idea you were "Guess Who" the other day. :~)

Shady ~ I'm with you, I love local theater, too. I felt they all were so talented,
dedicated and were loving being on that stage yesterday. I just bet there would be info by Googling about the Totem Pole Theater. Clint saw a play a few years ago in NC at Flatrock. I just Googled it and it is called the State Theater of North Carolina. Also, the Totem Pole Playhouse is alive and well! I read it opened in 1950. I hope we are able to support this local theater group in different ways.

It is great you have a new follower from TX. Shady, I get around (☺) and have already become a little acquainted with her by visiting her blog. You are getting lots of new followers and comments.

Thank you, Shady, I just got a call from my sister about a shooting in my hometown..more later...I am shaking.

A shooting? OMG! I hope it's not as bad as it sounds, dear friend.

P.S. I wanted to add to the comment, Shady, that I had wondered what had happened to the series about the oldest living Dell Rat. On my goodness, 99 years old with a broken hip. I hope the daughter still has enough information that she can still do the series sometime. It would be fascinating to read. Thank you for the update!

The news is that two have been hit at a pawn shop in our hometown. This is what is on the local news, that info only. We have heard names metioned and we know these people. Surely they will be caught. Am checking Facebook but no details yet. My sister was out and saw some of the commotion. Very sad.

You know the people who were shot in the pawn shop? I hope their wounds are not life threatening.

As for the diary series on the oldest living Dell rat, the daughter has already collected a wealth of material through conversations with her mother and by doing exhaustive research on her own in courthouse archives, etc. She (Kathy) is uncovering many amazing new facts about the early years of the Dell. We're floating her series until her mother's condition has stabilized. The mother will need to use a walker for the rest of her days.

It sounds like you had a great time. I haven't been to a play in years. Your post has sparked an interest. I think it's about time for me and mama to attend a play.

Take care and have a nice day :-)

And thanks for your recent comment on My Blog

Ron ~ Glad I jogged your memory about seeing some plays! I always do enjoy them and I hope you and your wife find one to enjoy. Thank you for stopping by by blog!

Shady ~ Thanks for the update that Kathy already has quite a bit of information about the series. This will be so fascinating, to hear the stories of a woman almost 100 years old! I sure wish her well, a woman with a serious health problem at the age of 99.

I am going to do a little blog on the recent happenings in my hometown. A well known man from our town was killed. We're all in shock. I'm going to do this blog as soon as I can. Thank you for your concern, Shady!
